Anastasia Potapova qualifies for the quarterfinals after an excellent match with Viktorija Golubic

No. 4 seed Anastasia Potapova advanced to the quarterfinals of the Transylvania Open (WTA 250) after a solid and spectacular performance against the Swiss Viktorija Golubic. It ended 6-2, 6-3 for Potapova, who had only one (small) level drop throughout a match full of superb executions.

Potapova thus reaches her sixth WTA quarterfinal this season and continues her rise in the WTA rankings: she started the year outside Top 100 and is now very close to climbing into World Top 40.

Although short, the first match of the day had all the ingredients for a good show, and many spectacular, well-thought-out points.

Potapova got off to a blistering start, quickly racing to 4-0, a lead she did not cede until the end of the set, although Golubic attempted a comeback and came within a two-game margin.

The second set was more dynamic, more intense, but also much more spectacular, with Golubic working magic with her one-handed backhand, and the ever-aggressive Potapova ready to accelerate and to step forward. Golubic came back from 0-2 to 3-2, but she couldn’t maintain the pace any further; Potapova took another break and made sure to confirm it until the end of the set.

“I am happy for this win and for the way I played. I had a moment of downfall, but sometimes that’s normal. The important thing is that I immediately returned to my usual level”, Anastasia said after the match.

For another WTA semifinal in 2022, Potapova will meet Hungarian Anna Bondar, whom she defeated this year in Australia, at the Yara Valley Classic.

“She is a very good player, very aggressive, so it will be an interesting match. I played against her in Australia, in very hot weather, a match of over three hours”, Potapova prefaced her match in the quarterfinals.
